Pulverizer Maintenance Checklist – Keep Output, Fineness and Safety Up

Daily, weekly and periodic maintenance tasks for hammer mills, micro pulverizers and classifier mills.

A pulverizer that loses 15% of its output rarely breaks suddenly — it wears gradually. Hammers round off, screens open up, bags blind and belts slip. This checklist helps operators of hammer mills, micro pulverizers, pin mills and classifier mills keep output, fineness and safety where they should be. Always follow the specific instructions supplied with your machine and isolate power before opening any guard or door.

Daily

  • Clean the inlet magnet and remove tramp iron — the most common cause of hammer, pin and screen damage.
  • Listen and feel for unusual noise or vibration at start-up and under load.
  • Check motor current (ammeter on the panel) against the normal value for that product; rising current at the same feed rate can mean wear or blinding.
  • Check that the cyclone and rotary airlock discharge freely; a blocked discharge sends product to the dust collector.
  • Check pulse air-jet dust collector pressure and timer operation, or shake fabric bags as instructed.
  • When switching products in a multi-product mill, clean the chamber, screen and cyclone.

Weekly

  • Inspect hammers or beaters for rounding and wear. Star-type Miracle Mill hammers have several working edges: rotate or reverse them before replacement.
  • Inspect screens for tears, enlarged holes and blinding. A torn screen shows up immediately as oversize in the product.
  • Check V-belt tension and condition; slipping belts reduce tip speed and fineness.
  • Check classifier elements — whizzer blades, gap plates or separator wheel — for build-up.
  • Grease bearings to the schedule and quantity in the manual; over-greasing causes heat as surely as under-greasing.

Monthly / periodic

  • Replace hammers in complete sets (or opposing pairs) to maintain rotor balance.
  • Inspect liners, breaker plates and serrated conical liners; replace before the body is exposed.
  • Check rotor balance and bearing condition (temperature, noise); replace bearings showing heat or roughness.
  • Inspect rotary airlock vane clearance; worn vanes leak air and reduce conveying.
  • Replace dust collector bags when pressure drop stays high after cleaning.
  • Verify anti-vibration mounts and foundation bolts.

Warning signs and likely causes

Keep critical spares

A set of hammers, two screens of each size you use, a belt set, bearings and dust collector bags will cover most stoppages. Premium Pulman group’s ancillary unit supplies wear parts — hammers, screens, pellet dies, rollers — for equipment supplied by the group.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should pulverizer hammers be replaced?

It depends entirely on the material and hours run. Track output and motor current; when output drops and rotating or reversing the hammers no longer restores it, replace the set.

Not sure which pulverizer fits your material?

Send us your material, required fineness and hourly output. Our application engineers will recommend a machine and can arrange a trial grind in our demonstration room in Ahmedabad.
